Notes

The description of the Mazurka is found in Dr. E. W. Shallenberg’s book. “Frederic Chopin”:

“It began with a procession in which the dancers made gliding passes and stamped their feet. In the second stage it broke up into pairs and solo dances; these dances were of prime importance for here the performers were on their mettle and here the innumerable small dramas were enacted which delighted Chopin – ‘Où l’amour se mèle aux douleurs de la patrie’ (‘Where love and the melancholy of the land meet’). These dances lasted an hour or more before the procession reformed at the end.”
